I've been thinking a little about the idea of "best" versus "favorite".

Sometimes it overlaps: like I think Predator is the best Arnold movie and it's also my favorite. Sometimes not: Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite Ghibli movie but I think Spirited Away is the best Ghibli movie.

I think "best" implies some influence from outside norms, moreso than "favorite". Like when I hear "favorite", I assume personal criteria and decisions go into the decision. "Best" implies more of a widely accepted (?) or generalized set of criteria that lead to deciding what is best. I think.

It's maybe sort of like how people might like bad movies? Maybe they found it entertaining and funny, but by all movie standards, it missed the mark.

Yeah something like best is more culturally driven whereas favorite is more personal. Sometimes they align and sometimes they don't.

It's probably more interesting when they don't.

Agree, @HolyGrayle. I think it's also a head/heart thing. You can objectively/cognitively judge things on certain standards, but then you love what you love, even if it doesn't make sense.

If it's widely recognised as the best then it will get the most publicity. I think that's a factor, because it's easier for something with less publicity to take you by surprise.

Favorite is internal.

Best is external.

Favorite is stagnation.

Best is prosperity.

Favorite is torture.

Best is blessing.
