I think you tried to solve the problem the wrong way. A better solution (in place of the invitation system), would be to create a more advanced access control system which would group the problematic users. Grouped users would be able to see normal posts and posts of their peers, but their own posts wouldn't be displayed to normal (non-problematic) users.

Think of it like shadowbanning with a echo-chambering vibe.

Trolls would be in one group, funny comments in another. Alt/far right/left groups could be children of some of the previously stated ones.

Because Filigree is shutting down, here's an archive.

See you around everyone.

Hi everyone I’m planning on shutting down filigree at the end of the year. Thanks for helping try it out with me.

Bug report: The password maxlength is 100 but it seems this isn't checked server-side. My password manager ignored the maxlength and set a 128-character password on my account which now makes it a pain to log in.

Being able to change the password would be useful too.

Really enjoyed this video by CGP Grey on attention. I agree with the general point of his video - in fact those types of ideas are what guided how I designed this website.

Let me know what you think, it's inspired me to cut a few social media outlets out of my life (namely reddit and twitter). Rather than abstaining, I might try limiting these platforms to "weekends only" or maybe "Tuesdays and Thursdays" (you get the idea).

Sorry I haven't implemented link support yet, I think I've finally settled on an idea worth implementing. I'll try to get it rolled out sometime next week. Hope you're having a nice weekend!

Protect your time and attention.

I've gone ahead and made a simple dark theme using CSS, it should work with any theming browser addon (like Stylus), here's the stylesheet:

Small update:

You can now delete comments. Added two new dot colors: on-brand-blue and minty-kiss-green.

After a week of trying Google Play Music, I'm surprised to find that: Google > Spotify. At least for me. What I care about most is "related artist" recommendations. For the music I'm interested in, Google's recommendations have been much better and introduced me to some great stuff.

Really interesting idea: potential to be a forum for high quality information but also searing honesty. Hope it catches on!

A Group is its Own Worst Enemy by Clay Shirky

An old but great read about group affects on the internet. Seems to be a good fit and still very relevant for this new community and basically all internet communities.

Invitation system is good. FYI a site called Lobsters rolled out the same way and keeps its invitation tree public:

How are you intending to do the "gardening" long term?

Will the code to this ever be open source?

I think that if everybody was able to spin up his own instance for a hobby of group of friends etc... it would be cool.

Hi! Interesting concept to require invitations for new members. I look forward to this experiment

The idea of including tiny dots as a minimal yet personal option for customisation is wonderful.

Hi, saw the post on HN. I like the idea (from reading the post and your About page) but just curious what the topic or "purpose" of the board is?

🐍 What would be scarier: a snake with two heads (one at each end) or a snake with two tails (one at each end and it’s definitely somehow alive and moving). 🐍

What's something small & lovely that happened to you today? (or recently) I am grateful for a nice long call catching up with my folks and fresh blueberries.

I've been thinking a little about the idea of "best" versus "favorite".

Sometimes it overlaps: like I think Predator is the best Arnold movie and it's also my favorite. Sometimes not: Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite Ghibli movie but I think Spirited Away is the best Ghibli movie.
